Surprise, AZ (June 26, 2020) Surprise City Court Presiding Judge, Judge Louis Frank Dominguez has been named the 2020 Justice Michael D. Ryan Award for Judicial Excellence recipient by the State Bar of Arizona Public Lawyers Section. Judge Dominguez received his B.A. in Psychology at Arizona State University and graduated from the Arizona State University College of Law. He was appointed as the Presiding Judge for the Surprise City Court in 2013.

The Public Lawyers Section annually honors a judicial officer who demonstrates dedication and commitment to improving the justice system. Recipients of the Justice Michael D. Ryan Award must demonstrate they have high ideals, personal character and judicial competence.

The Vacation Watch program is designed to provide you with the peace of mind that your house will be looked after while you are away. The Surprise Police Department offers Vacation Watches to Surprise residents who will be away for a minimum of two weeks.

The City Council voted 6-0 on May 5 to bring back the “resign to run” law that requires board and commission members to give up their seats once they submit nomination papers for City Council.

If you had been renting an apartment in Surprise for 1 year you can be a candidate to run to become a council member or mayor.

The Surprise Nominations Committee will conduct interviews at 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 8 for the following board and commission vacancies:

  • Audit Committee
  • Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee
  • Personnel Appeals Board and Veterans
  • Disability and Human Services Commission

The five-person committee will make recommendations to the City Council at its Tuesday, June 16 regular council meeting.

It will also review reappointment list and applications filed prior for the Veterans, Disability and Human Services vacancy.

The Council Chambers will be closed to the public during the meeting because of COVID-19 conditions.
